Green Initiatives by Balmer Lawrie 29 October 2015

Kolkata 29, 2015 -   The 21st session for the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21/CMP11) will be held at Paris from November 30th to December 11th, 2015. Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), through the Indian Pavilion being set up at the session, will be focusing on Bio-Fuels, increase in share of CNG and alternative fuels.

Balmer Lawrie, an MoPNG Company, gives highest priority to environment protection and has an established Environment Management System across the organization. The Company has been continuously implementing various green and sustainable initiatives and is focused on Energy Management and promotion of Renewable Energy. Balmer Lawrie has installed and commissioned a 160 KWp solar power plant at its Industrial Packaging units in Asaoti and Navi Mumbai and has plans to further install a 250 KWp unit at the other manufacturing units by 2019.

Balmer Lawrie has taken various initiatives to minimize the pollution load of its operations. The power and fuel consumption at each of its manufacturing plants is monitored and the quantity of usage per unit of output is continuously reduced. To minimise the generation of hazardous wastes, a Zero Liquid Effluent Discharge plant has been installed at the manufacturing facility in Manali, Chennai. Energy efficient welding machines along with low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paints have been introduced at Barrel Manufacturing units in Asaoti, Silvassa and Navi Mumbai. For to and fro transportation of containers from Kolkata Port to the company’s Container Freight Station, Balmer Lawrie has built an lntegrated Railway Siding between Kolkata Port and CFS, thus reducing Carbon Footprint significantly. For water conservation, Rain Water Harvesting facility has been implemented at the factory premises in Navi Mumbai and Chennai. The Company ensures proper development of green belts at each of its establishments and carries out regular tree plantation programs. All the major plants/ branches of the Company are ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001 certified.
